FCB Ostrava - about team (english)
From the born of SK Slezská to Baník FC Baník Ostrava began life in the pub At the Oak in 1922. Original name was SK Slezská Ostrava. The first club´s members didn´t belong to the richest Ostrava´s citizens, they were residents of the poor minor colony Kamenec.
They made first money from the St. Nicolas´ dancing party and carnival. A footbal team was formed in 1923 and the first match was played on March 4, 1923 against B team of another city´s club Slovan Ostrava. Slovan won 2:1. SK Slezská didn´t have their own field from the begining. Not very good field was made in 1925, not far away from today´s Bazaly Stadium. The new stadium had to be built after promotion to the Moravian-Silesian Division in 1934. It was located at Stará Střelnice (the Old Shooting-Range). Club´s popularity increased, 5,400 audiences saw match SK Slezská Ostrava vs. Slovan Ostrava (6:5) in 1935. Two years later, SK Slezská won their division and qualified to the 1st League.

After the World War II and various reorganisations after 1948, when communists took the rule, club relegated from 1st League for one year again, but promoted back in 1951, changed its name to Baník Ostrava and in 1954 reached their best final position beeing second. In 1956 Baník went for a tour to England, where they played against clubs like Everton (2:3), Leeds United (2:5), Brighton Howe (1:3) and Millwall (5:3). Step back

The 1990s brought great changes. Players left for richer Prague´s clubs or abroad, owners and supporters often changed. The last success was winning the Czechoslovak Cup in 1991. After Danish Odense BK (2:0 away, 2:1 home) they played against Galatasaray Istanbul in Cup Winners´ Cup. Baník won the match in Turkey 1:0, but the home match lost at all surprise 1:2. And in addition, it was the last match in European cups for long 13 years. The 90s were unsuccessful in general but the worst crises hit the club in 2001 (saved 1st League at 14th position).
